Well, it was back to the Chapel today after a wonderful weekend with my Auntie Elaine and family in Stainforth, Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
I left my desk on Friday with a bridge almost fitted for the violin I have been working on. Today, I have been working on completing that fitting and working on another way to shape the bridge to fit the violin. You could liken the whole process of what I am learning to clothes buying. You can get off the rack clothes from a department store, or you can go see a tailor, who will make you a custom fit outfit. This outfitting includes everything you could imagine from your underwear, right through your custom fitted suit and cuff links and Eau de cologne. A whole makeover.
For a professional set-up of a stringed instrument, the detail in cut of the bridge should show perfection. Me, being me will not settle for anything but the best. I have learnt to appreciate the sharpness of the chisel and treat it with respect. It has not given me any harm, but I know that it may well do in a momentary lapse of reason. I am enjoying not only the learning, but the ritual of handling my tools and finding beauty in the most simplest of things.

Not only have my days been inspirational in learning, but the freedom and time to look at the world around me has enabled me to take time out and appreciate the finer things. The weather has been wonderful and the Autmn skies have been magnificent. Tonight's has been the most awesome yet, I believe. A pity I did not have the best vantage, and the wrong lens on my camera caused me to miss a glorious rainbow over the St Giles Church. I did the best I could and then went for a walk to find some nice countryside to complement the wondorous cloudscape.

Well done again Kate - I love the pictures but more particularly the one you have taken of your chisel cuts. It reminds me of a family of four with dad in front, then mam pushing baby along and finally the reluctant kid with hands in pockets and kicking the ground with his toes! (Gee, I'm sharp!) Which reminds me, I presume John has shown you how to sharpen chisels properly - well can you do mine when you get back? (Please)

I like your story that goes with the chisel cut picture.
DeleteJohn has shown me what to do with sharpening chisels, but I haven't got to do it yet. Do you have any sharpening stones?
Kate, I hiked it all the way to the garage and was able to walk straight to my Silicon Carbide stone. It's still in the original Polystyrene container from my very early 'prospecting' days. I'll bring it over for you to have if you wish next week (to Ballarat that is). You'd better ask John if this is the correct stone to use etc.
